TRIBE Martial Arts Foundation
TRIBE Martial Arts Foundation was founded in 2019 to meet the urgent demand for accessible self-defense training and socio-economic empowerment programmes for women, youth, and families in underserved South African communities. In response to the rising crisis of gender-based violence (GBV), domestic abuse, and bullying, TRIBE offers more than just martial arts — we deliver a sustainable, community-led solution rooted in resilience, personal growth, and long-term independence.
TRIBE addresses the root causes of GBV, youth unemployment, and systemic inequality by equipping participants — especially women, girls, and young people with: Income-generating opportunities, Practical self-defence skills, Confidence-building tools
At the core of our work is QuanWessels Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Martial Arts Academy, led by respected second-degree black belts Professor Norman “Chef” Wessels and Professor Richard Quan. Their combined expertise in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), and high-level professional coaching provides the foundation for TRIBE’s structured self-defence and skills development programmes.
Our integrated approach combines martial arts training, education support, and entrepreneurship development to empower participants to unlock academic, leadership, and career pathways.
Many go on to become certified martial arts instructors, open their own academies, and generate sustainable income — contributing to long-term community transformation and breaking intergenerational cycles of violence and poverty.
VISION
We aim to build a community where women, young girls, and boys are empowered through martial arts, education, and support — enabling them to overcome adversity, unlock their potential, and become confident, resilient leaders in their lives and communities.
Our vision is to create a world where individuals, regardless of their background or circumstances, have the opportunity to thrive. As part of this vision, we are committed to establishing long-term, values-aligned partnerships that sustain our work over time, allowing us to focus on growth, scale, and lasting impact for generations to come.
MISSION
Our mission is to empower women, young girls, and boys in underserved communities affected by domestic abuse, violence, living in single-parent households, and underprivileged circumstances. We foster a supportive community that promotes personal growth, mental well-being, and education, equipping individuals with the tools they need to overcome adversity and thrive in all areas of their lives.
As part of our mission to empower communities through martial arts and self-defense, we are committed to building lasting partnerships that extend beyond short-term support. We seek long-term, values-aligned collaborations that ensure the ongoing sustainability of our programmes. By securing consistent, multi-year support, TRIBE can focus on scaling our impact, expanding our reach, and investing in the long-term growth and transformation of the communities we serve.
VALUES

At TRIBE Martial Arts Foundation, in partnership with QuanWessels BJJ and MMA Academy, we live and teach through the values of Honour, Strength, Courage, and Mastery, with empowerment at the heart of our mission.
Honour drives us to lead with integrity, respect, and service, uplifting every individual who steps onto the mat. Strength is cultivated not only in body, but in the resilience of women, children, and families reclaiming their power. Courage inspires us to confront cycles of violence, create safe spaces, and stand up for change. Through Mastery, we promote lifelong growth — empowering individuals to rise as leaders, protectors, and role models in their communities. Together with QuanWessels, we don’t just teach martial arts — we foster transformation and generational impact.
Our Team

At TRIBE Martial Arts Foundation, our team is more than instructors and coordinators, we are mentors, changemakers, and community builders. Each member of our team brings a unique blend of lived experience, technical expertise, and deep commitment to social change.
Beyond the mat, our coordinators, youth mentors, and programme leaders work closely with participants to provide academic support, emotional guidance, and pathways to income generation. Together we’re equipping future leaders, restoring confidence, and building a stronger, safer South Africa.
